Using KEI to Get Top Rankings for High Traffic Non Competitive Keywords
May 15th, 2008 Posted in Affiliate Marketing, Marketing, Onsite SEO, ToolsThe holy grail of search engine optimization is a highly sought keyword or key phrase that also has very little competition. This makes it very easy to rank at the top of the search engine results pages (SERPs) and also guarantees traffic for the targeted term. One such example is that I sometimes try to target a phrase that has 200 searches, but less than 100,000 results in an exact match search.
Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) Can Help You
Use Wordtracker to spot new keyword topics that relate to your industry. Observing higher KEI values will help you find phrases that are busy yet not too competitive. These phrases can often be ranked easily with only basic optimization.
Firstly, you will need to use Wordtracker for this exercise, since the explanations reference Wordtracker explicitly. Use Wordtracker’s free keyword tool, sign up for a free Wordtracker trial, or use one of their limited time membership offers.
What is KEI?
KEI compares the number of times a keyword has appeared in the Wordtracker database with the number of competing web pages to determine which keywords are most effective for your campaign. How will you know which keywords are most effective? Look for the keywords near the top. The higher the KEI, the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they have. This means you have a better chance of ranking near the top for those keywords and phrases.
The KEI is a measure of how effective a keyword is for your web site. The formula for calculating KEI is based on 3 basic rules:
- KEI should increase as keyword popularity increases. Popularity is just the number of times a keyword appears in the Wordtracker database.
- KEI should decrease as a keyword becomes more competitive. Competition is defined by the number of results returned in the SERPs from an exact match search.
- KEI should increase as a keyword becomes more popular and more competitive at the same time. This is because the usefulness of a keyword increases as its popularity increases. Even though you might have to spend more time dominating search for the keyword, the ROI for the time spent optimizing will be far greater due to the higher traffic for that term. Essentially, popularity weighs more than competition.
Wordtracker has many great uses, even with just the free keyword tool. I recommend if you are going to undertake any serious SEO with the potential for high profit margins, that you invest in a Wordtracker membership to take advantage of all their useful tools.
